At the helm of this gala is Vatel (Gerard Depardieu), the nobleman's steward. While Vatel is a whiz in the kitchen, he doesn't like having to kowtow to the dissolute royal entourage. To make matters worse, Vatel and the king's tres jolie mistress du jour (Uma Thurman)fall for each other. Their relationship incites jealousy in the king's chief toadie (played to perfection by Tom Roth), who cooks up a scheme to expose their affair and ruin Vatel.
