Bob, unable to function without the doctor, travels to the doctor's lake house. He decides to stick around and basically invites himself to be part of the doctor's family vacation.
The doctor gets more and more upset with Bob and tries everything to get him to leave, but Bob can't take the hint.
The doctor's family likes Bob and likes having him around. This only frustrates the doctor more.
When the doctor gets too fed up, he tries to kill Bob by tying him to a chair and strapping explosives to him. The doctor returns home to a surprise party.
Bob, thinking it's all just a test, gets loose and returns to the doctor's house, bringing the explosives along. He joins the party down by the lake, and gets cozy with the doctor's sister.
The explosives detonate, blowing up the house.
The doctor finally snaps and attacks Bob.
Ironically, in the end, the doctor winds up in a mental hospital and Bob remains with his family.

Dr. Marvin, a psychiatrist, is looking forward to being interviewed about his new book by "Good Morning America." The interview is being held in New Hampshire where he and his family are vacationing. Against all advice, his new and eccentric patient, Bob, manages to find out where Dr. Marvin is staying and follows him there. Dr. Marvin tries to get rid of Bob in various ways, but somehow, he keeps bouncing back. One obstacle is that Dr. Marvin's wife and 2 children take quite a liking to Bob. Bob seems to take center stage at the worst possible moments for Dr. Marvin. He is not trying to be a pest, but is happily in his own world, oblivious to the effect he is having. The movie is both hilarious and suspenseful and builds up to a crisis, after which the doctor has a breakdown. The pace of the movie is excellent and continues straight through to the surprise ending.

When a New York psychiatrist goes to Massachusetts to spend a vacation with his family, he is followed by a patient of his! And when the psychiatrist can't get rid of the patient, he becomes very frustrated. However, the psychiatrist's family loves the patient and they want him to stay, going against the doctor's wishes. Bill Murray is hilarious as the patient, and Richard Dreyfuss is brilliant as the psychiatrist.
