Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Where Eagles Dare

A joint Allied rescue mission behind enemy lines is a long shot but so implausible that it just might catch the Germans by surprise. British Major Jonathan Smith (Burton) and American Lieutenant Morris Schaffer (Eastwood) are in command of a small group of elite British soldiers who must infiltrate a heavily fortified German military complex and castle in Austria where an American General is held captive. Even though they are able to penetrate the defenses with Smith and Morris passing as German officers various members of the ensemble are detected and killed.

Riding an aerial gondola that is the only means of reaching the castle provides a close call but they manage to elude detection and begin their search for the prisoner. The Allies must pass before the scrutiny of German soldiers on several occasions but manage to get out with a little luck, a lot of explosions, and a staggering number of slain German troops. On the plane flight back to allied territory a double agent's identity is revealed and the spy is given two options at several thousand feet above the ground.
