Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Movie Review Summary

Actors: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

This is the age-old fairy tale retold in a modern setting. As children, Hansel and Gretel are suddenly left in the forest by their father. They find a gingerbread house, which they foolishly enter. They are caught by a candy witch who wants to cook them and eat them. The witch forces Hansel to eat candy while she makes Gretel prepare the oven to cook the children. Because of this, later in life Hansel becomes a diabetic. The children outsmart the witch and throw her into the oven instead. This makes Hansel and Gretel immune to spells cast by witches. Because of this horrible incident, they decide to become bounty hunters, and to hunt witches for the rest of their lives.

Later, as adults, they are hired by the Mayor of Ausberg, Germany to investigate the disappearance of children taken by witches and to hunt down those responsible. The witches are collecting twelve children, half boys and half girls, for a ritual sacrifice on the night of the blood moon. Each child has a birthday in a different month. They are missing only one of the twelve children needed to complete the collection. The witches attack the town of Ausberg to get the last girl they need. In a fierce battle they succeed in kidnapping the girl.

They also need a white witch for the ceremony. It turns out that Gretel is a white witch. Gretel inherited the powers from her mother who was also a good witch. The reason their father abandoned Hansel and Gretel in the woods when they were children, was to protect them from the witches that were going to attack their home. Their father and the mother both died protecting the children. Gretel is captured by the bad witches and taken to the ceremony. Hansel finds another local woman is also a white witch. The two of them set out to rescue Gretel and save the children from death.
Best part of story, including ending: It is interesting how the modernization of the fairy-tale story turns this into more of an adult fantasy/action film rather than a children's fairy-tale used to scare young children from eating too much candy.

Best scene in story: I like the magical gingerbread house, both in the beginning when the children throw the witch into the oven and in the end where it is the scene of the final battle because of the special effects used.

Opinion about the main character: There are actually two main characters in the story, both Hansel and Gretel, because they act like a team. It is nice to see siblings team up to do good together.
