I chose this work because the Harry Potter series was so captivating. Of course, this is a departure for the author, and I don't know how successful it was.

This little tale of fiction revives the idea of a dark comedy. The story takes place in Pagford, a posh suburban area. When the reader arrives in the story, we find out that Barry Fairother has just died. (He was a treasured community member with high rank in the local council). Aside from mourning, some people are gunning for his seat. It is clear pretty early on that the struggle for power is more important than decorum or morality. Soon, folks start to develop alliances. But before they can make any strong moves, the younger generation decides to strike first with accusations of rape, drug use, and prostitution on a public message board. The book is very slow before the posts go up. Once they do, though, it's interesting to see how quickly everyone starts to turn on each other.
Best part of story, including ending:
I hated how slow it started. Even after the juicy part, it was a bit of a chore to read for me.
Opinion about the main character:
There was no real main character aside from Barry Fairother. I dislike that I didn't learn more about him earlier in the story.
