Lawyer Mac (Kevin Kline) finds himself surrounded by thugs, when he gets stranded in a no-go area of Los Angeles in the middle of the night, because his car breaks down. The thugs get talked out of harassing and mugging him by Simon (Danny Glover), a local truck driver, rescuing him. Mac befriends Simon, despite the fact their lives are very different. Meanwhile, Mac's wife Claire (Mary McDonnell) and best friend action-movie producer Davis (Steve Martin) run into some life-altering situations. Claire finds an abandoned baby girl while jogging down the street and decides to adopt her after a homeless person whispers to her she should. And Davis all of a sudden picks up an interest in philosophy after being shot down by a mugger, pledging to devote the rest of his life to ridding the cinema of violence. At the end, they visit the Grand Canyon on a joint day trip, a place that is philosophically and literally bigger than their respective lives.
