Three college students start a rumor for a school project that leads to criminal consequences. Three friends, Derrick, Cathy, and Travis make-up a rumor about a fellow schoolmate for their communications project. Their target is Naomi, a privileged, popular student with a boyfriend Beau. Since Naomi is a self-proclaimed virgin, they gossip about her losing her virginity to Beau, but the rumors evolve into Beau raping Naomi, eventually leading to Beau's arrest. Cathy realizes that the project is spiraling out of control and wants to end the prank. She then learns that Derrick and Naomi have a high school history, that Derrick was accused of raping Naomi back then. She learns that Derrick planned this from the beginning to get back at Naomi. When Naomi is found dead, Derrick implicates Travis. Travis confronts Derrick which results in a gun going off and shooting Cathy. Derrick then admits to everything. Cathy is alive, Naomi is alive as well, and Derrick realizes that he has been set-up to admit to his crimes.

It's a unique premise, of a seemingly innocent thing snowballing into something bad.

When Derrick learns that it's all a hoax to entrap him.
Opinion about the main character:
Without Derrick's motives/real agenda, the idea of getting back at someone using gossip seems a little high school-ish to me.
