Kate is going to have step up her game if she really wants to be a ballerina. Kate and her sister Gwen have been groomed to be top rate ballerinas' since they were ages three and four. Gwen has always taken the lead as the “star”. Kate gets a chance to run Swan Lake as lead dancer for several acts after Gwen injuries her knee by putting it through a patio door. She also has some mental health challenges. Her stage persona was taking a toll on her life in other areas.

Their brother Keith is a kid tennis star and their parents are stretched in rehearsals, plays, and matches. With Gwen out on leave Kate gets the opportunity to attend ballet school at one of the most prestigious institutions for dancers. The fact that the school is located in New York thrills Kate.. Her parents are not thrilled about a teenager living in the big city who still needs to complete high school. Her mother still nervous about the whole idea finally agrees. Kate is taken in by a rich school board member who volunteered to house a young dancer with potential.. Wendy Griston Hedge lives on Park Ave with a doorman and Kate is trying to adjust to the difference in lifestyle. Kate only has a year to make it on her own after that Gwen is scheduled to join her. Money is a problem. Kate is trying to fit in with her peers she needs cab fare, money for high end accessories and the like. Her parents will only assist with the basics. To add some coins to her coffers Kate agrees to write assignments for David and Seth two fellow dancers with cash.
Kate makes friends and her year with Wendy as her patron flies by. They keep in touch as Kate can talk to Wendy about anything. Kate falls in love with Hilel while working. She ignores the scowls when people tell her is not a one woman man. He starts sleeping with Gwen and falls in love with her. Kate is hurt but doesn't show it. She sees other guys but refuses to let her guard down.
Wendy is dying. She shares the information with Kate and they are both saddened. Kate promises to visit everyday. Wendy declines, insisting that Kate stay on her dance schedule.
Gwen gets a dance opportunity with a company in Grand Rapids, Michigan not far from her parent's home, while. Kate goes off to Amsterdam to dance. The sisters have both grown professionally and value the intimacy of their grown up bond as sisters more than ever before.
