This is the second book of the Age of Fire series. Book 1, “Dragon Champion,” focused on Auron, one of the two dragon hatchlings who survived an attack on their cave. Auron used himself as a bait to give his sister, Wistala, a chance to escape. This second book begins at the same point, with dwarfs and elves bursting into the dragon cave, but it centers on Wistala.

Seizing the opportunity given to her by her brother, Wistala runs away and goes to look for her father, AuRel, who was away from home when the family was betrayed and attacked. She finds him badly wounded in a fight with dwarfs. Wistala tries to nurse her father back to health when a hunter named Dragonblade shows up and kills him. Wistala flees, pursued and nearly killed by the Dragonblade, but a kind elf saves her.
The elf, Rainfall of Hypatia, takes Wistala home with him. The young dragon is bent on revenge, although she knows she is not yet strong enough; she must wait for at least a year to mature. Wistala lives with Rainfall, who treats her very kindly. He even makes her his heir, but when an evil neighbor wants his estate, Rainfall decides to send Wistala away. Wistala travels with his friends, and on the way learns more about the betrayal of her family, the wizard behind it, and his plans. The wizard wants to exterminate all the races but his, so that only humans populate the realm. He captures dragons, puts them under a spell and uses them for his purposes. This gives Wistala an idea of how to carry out her vengeance.
