Dreams of Gods & Monsters Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Dreams of Gods & Monsters

The story is about two naive creatures, an angel and a chimera, who dream of peace and try to stop a thousand year old war. Eliza Jones seems like a very normal young woman. She works as a researcher in an important museum and she shares an apartment with one of her colleagues. Her normalcy stops here though. Since she was just a little girl, Eliza was tormented by horrible nightmares. In fact, she had a pacemaker installed in her chest so that she wouldn't die of an arrhythmia triggered by her nightly terrors.

One night, Eliza starts screaming in terror and Gabriel, her colleague, jumps out of bed to comfort her. After a while, Eliza and Gabriel start receiving hundreds of texts urging them to turn on the TV. Eliza receives a text from her family and she becomes very nervous. The whole world is on the verge of a mass hysteria because a thousand harp singing, wing fluttering angels were spotted in the sky above Uzbekistan just minutes before.

Karou is still in the Moroccan desert trying to revive her chimera army by performing magic and resurrecting the dead warriors. Zuzana and Mik are Karou's old friends. They came to visit her one day and she sent them to stay in another Kasbah to protect them from her dangerous army of monsters. One day, the two of them see the news and they understand the urgency of the situation. Zuzana and Mik jump in a van and run to announce Karou about the arrival of her mortal enemies, the seraphs.

Zuzana and Mik arrive near Karou's Kasbah. They notice that Karou's face is badly bruised and they guess that the perpetrator is no other that Thiago, the White Wolf, the chimera commander. To their surprise they also meet Akiva and Liraz, two seraphs and they cannot believe their ears when the two arch enemies, Thiago and Akiva start talking about the possibility of an alliance.

Akiva announces that he has a small army hidden in the Kirin caves, in Eretz. He tells them that the Emperor Jael and his Dominon army came here, on Earth, to procure some human weapons. Jael wants some powerful weapons so that he can destroy his opponents back in Eretz including the chimera and the rebel seraphs, the Misbegotten. Akiva wants to stop Jael by forging a powerful alliance between the chimera and the Misbegotten and so to stop the war for good. Thiago, Karou, Akiva, Liraz, Zuzana, Mik and the chimera army pack their bags, go through the portal and enter Eretz. They go to the Kirin caves and meet Akiva's army of Misbegotten.

In the mean time, Eliza and her boss are shipped to a hidden location to study some strange monster remains found in a pit near a Kasbah in Morocco. Eliza sees the chimera remains and starts having some revelations about who she is and about her nightmares. She starts remembering things and she gets very emotional.

The chimera and the Misbegotten share the Kirin caves and they start planning their next move. They decide to send Karou and Liraz back on Earth to force Jael to leave the humans alone and to return to Eretz and fight his war without weapons of mass destruction.

In another part of Eretz, a place called the Far Isles, the Stelians are getting worried that someone is using their magic and destroying their world. The young queen of the Stelians decides to find the magus who uses their magic and in her search she finds Akiva. She is stunned to discover that Akiva is one of them, a long lost scion of the Stelians.

Emperor Jael and his army of angels landed in Rome. The Pope met them and offered them some scrumptious chambers inside the Vatican. Razgut, the hideous fallen angel is helping Jael secure his weapons. They hope to make some quick human connections, secure some weapons and return back to Eretz as soon as possible.

The chimera Misbegotten army is attacked by Dominion seraphs near the portal. Liraz and Karou are about to pass and get back to Earth but Liraz sends Akiva through the portal and seals it behind her. Akiva, Karou, Zuzana, Mik and some chimera warriors must go to Rome and stop Jael and Razgut before it is too late.

One of Eliza's colleagues leaks some strange information to the press. He reveals that Eliza was part of an angel worshiping cult as a child and that she ran away and became a scientist when she was a teenager. In the meantime Eliza seems to be losing her mind. She starts talking in a very strange language and her boss sends her away. Akiva meets Eliza in a Kasbah and he is stunned to find out that she speaks the seraphim language. She talks about monsters and total destruction and about a strange place.

Akiva and Karou manage to enter the Vatican and they go straight to Jael's room. Akiva burns an imprint on Jael's chest. He tells him that now, based on that imprint, Akiva can kill Jael from a distance. Jael understands the threat; he takes his army and returns to Eretz. The chimera Misbegotten alliance awaits him and neutralizes his forces. The war is over.

Akiva and Karou start rebuilding their planet. Akiva goes to the Far Isles and he takes Eliza with him. Eliza and Razgut come from a special unit. They were sent to create portals and unite the whole universe in a great happy family. They created portals and unleashed a huge dark force which came back and destroyed everything until the Stelians managed to stop them by using magic.

Akiva and Karou manage to find some time together and they meet in the Far Isles. The reconstruction continues.
Best part of story, including ending: The story is about making peace. I liked it because it had a happy ending,

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is the one where Karou and Akiva meet in the Far Isles. The war is over and they can finally be together in their own house.

Opinion about the main character: Karou is very determined. I liked her desire for peace and her capacity to dream about it and make it happen.
