When he meets writer Mandy Grant he requests that she take him on as a handyman in exchange for room & board and $50 a week. Although Mandy is a tad reluctant, she gets a personal endorsement from Nathan Tate, the Sheriff of Conard County. Since Mandy is greatly in need of a handyman, she brings Ransom on board. Mandy and Ransom share a mutual attraction that surprises both of them. Since the death of her husband, Mandy has been living a celibate lifestyle and until Ransom came into her life she couldn't imagine ever falling in love again. But Ransom is a man with big secrets. He is a former CIA agent who spent four years as a captive, with the brutal scars on his body to show for it. Although Ransom has fallen in love with Mandy he has suddenly become aware that a dangerous killer is after him. Ransom fears that Mandy will get caught in the crossfire and get injured or killed. As Ransom prepares to suit up again as a CIA agent in order to catch a killer, he vows that the love of his life will not be harmed. Will Ransom survive an assassin's vengeance to make a life with Mandy?
