Soren Alba is a young barn owl living on an island in the middle of the Sea of Hoolemere. There, on that fairly small piece of land, an enormous tree sits. This is the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, home of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole. THe Guardians of Ga'Hoole are a band of noble owls who rise into the darkness each night to perform noble deeds, right all wrongs, vanquish the proud, & make strong the weak. Their greatest enemy, the Pure Ones, are led by Kludd, Soren's older brother. When the Guardians finally decide to lay a surprise attack on the Pure One's canyonlands, they send Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, Otulissa, Martin, & Ruby. They are charged with 3 different missions: Obtain allies with the warriors of the Northern Kingdoms, learn all they can from the magnificant library of the Glauxian Brother's Retreat, & find Hoke of Hock, a Keilan snake that could help them.

Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, Eglantine, Otulissa, Martin, and Ruby (in short the Chaw of Chaws) are sent on a mission by the Parliament of the Great Tree. They are sent to the Northern Kingdoms where they each split up.
Gylfie and Otulissa are charged with delivering Dewlap to the Glauxian Sisters. They then go to the Glauxian Brothers' Retreat,a place of scholars and a fantastic library. Otulissa must find a copy of the fleckasia book that Dewlap had consficated from her. Meanwhile, she falls for Cleve of Firthmore, a prince for the royal hollow of Snarth. Glyfie is shocked to find that Ifghar, Eyzlryb's traitorous brother is here also.
Soren, Digger, Eglantine, and Twilight proceed to the Firth of Fangs where they meet a polar bear named Svall. Svall takes them to Moss, who is a skog, or a teller of tales. There they explain to Moss the situation of the Pure Ones and plead Moss to raise an army of owls to help the Guardians. However, Moss is skeptical that this will happen. Something as big as full-scale war must be considered by the Parliament.
Ruby and Martin proceed to Hock Island, where they meet Hoke of Hock, an old friend of Eyzlryb. He, too, is doubtful that the owls in the Northern Kingdoms will fight.
Meanwhile, the chaw of chaws meet together to learn the art of the ice sword and other weapons of the North. Soren is disappointed when the Parliament's decision was still not made after a while. However, Soren and the chaw of chaws must go south. If they don't hurry, then the fierce winter winds will bar their way.
Sure enough, they fight through the katabatic winds. During a particular fierce storm, a group of garishly colored pirates capture Glyfie. Soren is heartbroken and he flies back to the Tree with a heavy heart.
Soren is appalled that the leaders of St. Aggies Academy, Skench and Spoorn, are being treated as guests at the tree. His temper gets to the best of him and he excuses himself from dinner early.
Meanwhile, Glyfie finds out that Ifghar is behind her kidnapping. Unless she tells of the Tree's plans for attack, she will be set out for the wolves to devour. Twilla, an elderly owl from the Glauxian Brothers' Retreat, rescues her with the use of golden sedge berries. Together, she and Glyfie escape by using the pirates' vanity to their advantage.
Glyfie is setting out south when she feels that she needs to go back. She flies north resolutely, singing a song.
Soren comes up with an idea of rendering the Pure One's defense useless with the use of cold coals, which will destroy the flecks' power.
