Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, and Eglantine band together to find the venerable Ezylryb. In doing so, they find themselves learning more about the owl's mysterious past. Ezylryb is actually the famous Lyze of the Northern Kingdoms, a fierce warrior as well as a devoted scholar. After the long War of the Ice Talons, he hung up his battle claws and retired to the Tree to educate young owls. Though age has weakened his physical body, Ezylryb's expanding knowledge may be useful to the dreadful band of Barn Owls who call themselves the Pure Ones. The Pure Ones are led by a malevolent leader named Metal Beak, whose name is spoken with dread.
