George, her friend the thief, starts wooing her but it is Prince Jonathan who conquers her heart. With these things on her mind as well as The Ordeal for Knighthood, Alanna also has to deal with Duke Roger of Conte, her greatest enemy ever, who is proving to be as guilty as she has always suspected him to be. Shortly after being knighted, Alanna is finally able to face with him in a clash of swords, before she sets out into the world to seek adventure.

Alanna is also faced with female teenage problems. She wants to learn more about being a girl and doing girly kinds of things. She and Jon are interested in each other, but George also has his eye on her.
