Sarah Conway has lived apart from her father all her life and she finally gets to join him in Arizona but when she gets there she learns of his death and must forge a life in the wild west all on her own. Sarah quickly meets several townspeople who were very fond of her father and who seem to take her under their wing and accept her. Jake Redman, half-apache gunslinger, comes into Sarah's life as a reluctant protector and sets about capturing her heart with his troubled eyes and gentle ways.

Sarah finds that there are rumors about the land her father left to her, rumors of a gold mine on it. Most everyone believes it was her father's fanciful wishing but there are some who believe the rumors and want the mine for themselves. A plot to take over the land is under way and with Jake's help she finds out what happened to her father. Along the way Jake realizes how much he's fallen in love with Sarah and must decide if he's worthy enough for her pure heart. Sarah learns how to function on her own instead of depending on the comforts of city life.
