When Susan, an American archaeology student, gets the chance to spend her summer working on a dig in Scotland, she jumps at the chance. Her first week in Scotland, however, is not as idyllic as she expected: an elderly and eccentric Nationalist, auld Tammas, seems determined to make trouble for her, and just as Susan finds an ally in James (a young Scot who bears a striking resemblance to Bonnie Prince Charlie), Tammas is murdered, and she is a prime suspect.

Susan and James set off across the countryside, trying to escape from the police, and from the criminals who framed them for Tammas' murder. The two discover that Tammas was involved in a plot to hide away an ancient Scots relic, buried at the site where Susan was to have been digging.
