In the year 1599 Barnabas Sackett, son of a soldier and himself a farmer and fisher of the Fen-lands, becomes the obsessive object of an English Nobleman's revenge for an imagined slight and must flee England. He ends up on a ship first as a prisoner and eventually takes over as the Captain.
