After three failed ones the forth, to Clarence “Mr. Can't Seem to Grow Up” is on its last leg. Clarence has a zeal for dreaming but lacks the ability to think ideas through and follow up with work. She loses her job as a call-center manager and keeps all her woes to herself. Debt collectors call on a regular basis. The one good thing is that her son Alex has been awarded academic scholarships from several universities. He wants to put school of for a year and travel to the Middle East where his father is reporting news. Alex has never hung out with his father. Katie let it slip one day while watching the news with her son. Alex's dad had been a college senior and Katie a freshman when they had sex. They were not boyfriend and girlfriend and Kate didn't argue when she shared her pregnancy news and he walked away.

Katie's mom, Norris is not happy with her only daughter. Alex stayed with his grandma a lot while he was growing up. Katie's mother wants her to invite Clarence back home. Katie is not interested this was the third time Clarence has walked out on her and the boys and she is over it.

Her best friend Donna wants her to take her cake baking skills and turn them into a commercial business. Katie wants to finish the book she's working on. She has a master's degree but isn't sure what to do with it at the moment.

Katie is bored being at home all day and turns to online dating. She doesn't know that is wise to use an alias due to the sheer number of fools in the universe. She has met a couple of people on line that she has real conversations with over the phone. No love interests have panned out. There are of course the men who want to sext her to death in chat rooms, but she finds that totally unappealing even though she had an orgasm with the first guy she chatted with.

Clarence begs her back and she takes the boys to visit him for the summer. He is living with his sister who despises Katie. Clarence promises he'll send the boys for Thanksgiving and backs out at the last minute.

In total she dates seventeen men from on line conversations. She doesn't sleep with any of them. She allows her brothers wife Georgia to set her up with a friend (Noah) they become hanging buddies. Katie gets a job at as a program manager and is dissatisfied with office politics.

Katie decides to focus on herself she loses sixty five pounds, and decides to start a catering business (her cakes are the bomb!). She makes a firm decision to divorce Clarence and sue for custody. She sells her rental property and pays down her debt, and rents a nice home with a big backyard in the suburbs for her and her boys.

Noah shows up for Georgia's Christmas party and invites Katie to a kiss. She may be planning wedding number five!
