Christopher Marlowe. It is 1589 and the man many consider the rival of William
Shakespeare is experiencing the last days of his life. In this
“roman a clef” we meet and get to know “Kit” Marlowe, playwright and poet
extraordinaire, who often got involved in his notorious street brawls. Marlowe's
short life was filled with not only his brilliance but his controversial--even for the
Elizabethans!--lifestyle. This is an intriguing, albeit fictional, account of Marlowe's
short life, going into the theory that he had been in the employ of the Queen's secret
service and had, indeed, worked on a number of cases involving the gathering of
secret intelligence for the government. That and owing to his penchant for not
keeping his mouth shut get him into fatal trouble. This historical piece is well
researched and compelling reading. Cook presents “that fatal day in Deptford” in a
realistic, convincing manner.
