As the book opens, he is nursing a broken heart following his failed engagement. Ron and Katie have admired each other from afar but have never acted on their attraction for each other. Enter Jimmy Garrett, Ron's new roommate, who is a rich and good looking young man with a powerful desire for Katie. He talks her into dating him even though she harbors a crush on Ron. As the weeks pass, Jimmy grows more frustated, because Katie will not "go-all-the-way" with him. In the meantime, Katie and Ron have been building a special friendship with one another but both are too stubborn and too afraid of getting hurt to express their real feelings. Sunday, December 7 changes everything. While Jimmy is away for the weekend, Ron and Katie confess their love for one another. Jimmy returns, having joined the Marines and is determined to make Katie his bride before he goes off to war. She lets him down easy and does not tell him about her feelings for Ron. He hears the news from a third-party, and he unleashes his jealous (drunken) rage against Katie.

The book begins in the fall of 1941 just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and America's entry into the second world war. Katie McNeill, a shy but beautiful clerk, who has been labeled an old maid by her coworkers at the University of Maryland, suddenly finds herself involved in a love triangle. She is pursued by a young student, Jimmy Garrett, who is a spoiled young man from a wealthy Maryland family. The other man in her life is Ron Miller, a handsome and intelligent Army officer, who is attending graduate school at the university. While he and Katie share an attraction for each other, he is leery of falling in love after being hurt by his ex-fiancée. As Ron and Katie build a friendship with one another, Jimmy becomes more and more insistent that she take their relationship to a level which she does not desire.
On Sunday, December 7, upon learning that Pearl Harbor has been attacked by the Japanese, Ron and Katie finally confess their love for one another. However, Jimmy is not the kind of man to take “no” for an answer.
