The second novel in the Wideacre trilogy focuses on Beatrice Lacey's orphaned daughter, Julia. Before Beatrice's death in Wideacre, she predicted that a "favored child" would inherit the estate. Beatrice left behind two children, Julia and Richard (who believe that they are cousins), and only one can be the heir to Wideacre. The inhabitants believe Julia to be the Favored Child. Julia seems to be in touch with the estate and the people, but Richard is as cruel and ruthless as Beatrice before him. He rapes Julia and impregnates her so that she must be forced to marry him, and their claims to the estate will be united as one (as the man he will be the legal owner). As the birth of her child draws near, Julia begins to realize that a connection with Wideacre can be just a great a curse as it is a blessing, and she must find a way to save her unborn child from the obsession and madness that ties the Laceys to wideacre.
