This book is about Henry who is an American bomber pilot during WW2; he is in his squadron when they are attacked by a group of Messerschmitt which are German fighter planes. The bombers which are slow cannot outrun the fighters and Henry's plane is shot down. Then a French school teacher who is in the resistance gives him food and helps him to the next post in the French resistance. He then goes on to Madame, who is a rich woman who Henry pretends to be his son. She takes very good care of him and then he has to move on to a poor farmer. He is with a boy named Pierre most of the time and befriends the boy. He is able to understand everybody because he took French his whole time from 7th grade until he graduated high school. He must leave the boy because the Nazis have found out about some of the posts in the resistance and they take the mom. He is very sad because he has to leave Pierre who is his new friend he always plays with. He brings Pierre to the church so he is not captured. He gives him his favorite marble as a parting gift. Then he is on to a French Army station where he meets someone from his squadron. They have to go through the mountains to get to the next post in the resistance. The “guide” that leads them through the mountains was paid off by the Nazis and Henry is captured. He trains the kill dog and he tames it. Then he opens the door and there is the Nazi questioner. He takes out his gun and shoots the dog. Then he is going to take him to the Nazi police to decide where he should go. He times it right and kills the high ranking Nazi officer and the driver he escapes and is given a ride into Great Britain where he catches a ride home.
