Sheila survives in the war ravaged streets of Warsaw, as she flirts with danger, using her position to both undermine the German agents and counteract the horrors they are creating. It is when she finds her friends, whom have been flung far over the country; Andrew as joined the war, and his survival is unknown; Barbara has joined the hospital, housing orphaned children, and their mother has remained in her village, to hide rebels, that Sheila realises that she should do more. She becomes more daring, until inevitably she is suspected by the Germans. Ingeniously, she uses her contacts in the German military to transport her partially to her now destination.
She arrives in the town in which she was formerly holidaying, to find its occupants devastated by the German presence. She cannot long stay there, as the determined German officer who was humiliated by Sheila is hunting for her.
As Sheila flees through the forests of Poland, she learns more and more about the bravery and defiance of the Polish people. But will Adam, with whom she has been fleetingly reunited, brave the wrath of the leaders of the rebellion and defy their orders so he can be with Sheila?
