In Delray, Florida, forty-year-old nurse Terry Painter prided herself on her sensible pragmatic nature. Yet when the very tall young looking Alison Simms arrives at her home inquiring about renting a cottage from her, Terry agrees to lease the place. After Alison leaves, Terry thinks about what happened, as she knows nothing about her new tenant.

However, Terry and Alison seem to get on and a friendship begins to form though the older woman has concerns with the ambiguous responses her tenant provides to her questions. When Terry reads entries in Alison's journal that imply her tenant was seeking her out specifically in Florida, she wonders why. When she meets two friends of Alison and the woman's “brother”, Terry turns even more paranoid that her renter and associates want to do her harm unless she acts first.

WHISPERS AND LIES is an exciting suspense thriller that never lets up until the final twist occurs. The story line is fast-paced as the audience observes Terry becoming increasingly paranoid over Alison and her friends, but fans will wonder if the distrust and anxiety is valid or crazy. Genre fans will want to read Joy Fielding's latest novel told from the perspective of Terry, but make sure not to have any company for a few days.
