Write Well and Sell describes techniques for getting started in the field of freelance greeting card writing. Louden begins by describing how she got into the greeting card business and answering some of the questions most often asked such as how much money there is to be made and how to avoid one's ideas from being stolen.

The book then goes on to describe what supplies are necessary to set up a home office and what one must do to prepare to sell verses. The most important suggestion here is to send away for guidelines from at least five different companies, and to keep active files of guidelines, need lists, and submissions.
Louden then goes on to explain the different types of occasions most often sought after, such as birthdays, graduations, and seasonal occasions. For each of these occasions, she lists several smaller categories.
The book also includes several exercises to begin to generate ideas for verses. The majority of these verses are not tradidional rhymed poetry but are instead pithy statements about life, and so the exercises encourage the writer to do things such as creating puns from commonly used expressions.
An appendix includes a short list of editors and addresses for some medium sized greeting card companies and a list of resources for further information.
