This is a beautiful story about family and traditions that begins as Sam Krichinsky (Mueller-Stahl), a Jewish immigrant, arrives in Baltimore just in time for the Fourth of July fireworks. It's an awesome introduction to a new life. There are new inventions and new ideas that threaten the family bond, including Americanizing their family name. This is what his son Jules “Kaye” (Quinn) has done. We see life through his eyes, too, as well as those of his young son (Wood).

Another excellent film in Barry Levinson's ongoing series of films set in Baltimore (Diner, Tin Men). An all-star cast.
