Carmen: A Hip Hopera, is based on an opera from the 19th century. It blends a love opera with a lot of modern day rap and hip hop. Beyonce plays Carmen Jones, a seductress who constantly gets into trouble and falls in love. Her boyfriend is officer Derrick Hill, portrayed by Mekhi Pheiffer. One night she gets arrested and gets taken to jail. On the way the police officer Frank Miller, played by Mos Def, falls madly in love with her and doesn't take her to jail. Carmen then falls in love with superstar Blaze, and messes things up for everyone.
