After watching this film, I'm glad I don't own a cell phone. Like a high-speed “Phone Booth,” girlwatcher Ryan (Evans) answers a cell call from a frantic Jessica Martin (Basinger), insisting she's been locked in an attic after kidnappers took her and smashed the attic phone (she randomly jury-rigged exposed wires until reaching Ryan). When he realizes it's no prank, he races to police to partially inform Sergeant Mooney (Macy) of the predicament. Subsequent chases involve Ryan directly with the kidnappers thru crowded freeways and tunnels, an electronics store, LAX, construction sites and other danger zones. Since there are five bad guys/girls plus some crooked cops, it's somewhat hard to follow the killers. But, since the guns change hands again and again through a few too many thriller clichés, only those whose resources prevail win the struggle.

Kidnapped from her home and held hostage in an attic, science teacher Jessica Martin (Basinger) learns that her captor's next target is her son and husband because of what her husband accidentally witnessed. Desperate for help, Jessica uses the wires from a shattered telephone and wounds up making a random call to a young man's (Evans) cell phone begging for his help. Reluctant at first, the man too gets tangled up in the danger in an effort to help the woman. The story, appropriate in this cellular-crazed day and age, builds a lot of tension and intrigue from start to finish. William H. Macy plays a cop also on the captors tracks.
