Jan Schlictmann (Travolta) is a fairly young and egotistical attorney who chases easy money cases. But when a young mother in Woburn, Massachusetts, begins to suspect her son and other children have died of leukemia because of toxic wastes in the tap water, she convinces Schlichtmann to go after the two big companies who might be responsible. Naturally, the parent company has much more powerful lawyers and money to fight the case. Based on Jonathan Harr's book about a true story, "A Civil Action" is a higher-grade Grisham tale: a little heavy on procedure, tough to dramatize, but with respectable plotting and acting. The supporting cast includes John Lithgow, Kathleen Quinlan, pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini, Stephen Fry, Sydney Pollack, and (uncredited!) Kathy Bates, Harry Dean Stanton, and Edward Herrmann.
