A con man named Harry Dean (Caine) and his lovely but unwitting accomplice Hong Kong nightclub dancer Nicole Chang (MacLaine) attempt to steal a priceless Middle Eastern bust of an Asian princess. The two are masquerading as a titled British couple Lord and Lady Dean, traveling through a Muslim nation. Ahmad Shahbandar (Lom) is an extremely wealthy art collector acting as their chivalrous host with his eye on Lady Dean. The artifact, resembling the Shahbandar's dead wife and coincidentally Lady Dean, is safeguarded with state-of-the-art technology and armed sentries in his palatial hotel abode.

When Lady Dean learns of the plan to steal the statue she threatens to pack her trunk and leave right away. She relents and accepts her host's dinner invitation. They are at a lavish restaurant dining with the chief of police when she leaves the table to use the lavatory instead returning to find her partner. In the meantime Harry has created a diversionary fire before making his way into the fortified residential apartments of Shahbandar. Humorous twist of plot makes the movie a lighthearted crime caper with exotic locales and an unforeseeable conclusion.
