They hide their money under the walls of a prison for women, the House of D, and Tom uses to talk with Lady, one of the prisoners, who, using a mirror, can see him from her cell. When Tom falls in love with Melissa, Pappass steals the bicycle they wanted to buy. Tom, to prevent Pappass's discharge, tells the school's principal he's the one responsible for the stealing. When Tom's mother learns that her son has been expelled from St-Andrews, she takes pills and ends braindead. Tom, after having listened to Lady's advice, decides to run away to France. When Tom's confession is finished, his wife asks him to go back to NYC in order to settle his personal matters once and for all. So, Tom flies to the U.S. and visits Pappass and Lady.
