Two little girls, Victoria and Lilly are left in a cabin in the woods by their mentally anguished father. The girls are taken care of a dark being, who they call "Mama." Years later, they are found by their uncle, Lucas, who is the twin brother of their father. The girls are wild in nature and are in the care of a psychologist Dr. Dreyfuss. Lucas and the girls' aunt Jean want custody of the the girls, but they are released in the care of Lucas and his girlfriend Annabel, on the condition that they continue psychological treatment. Victoria, the older girl grows fond of Annabel, Lilly is hesitant of the change, and often plays with Mama. Lucas and Annabel think that Mama is imaginary. Victoria grows fearful of each day, because she knows that Mama is jealous and losing control over them. Mama attacks Lucas who falls, and becomes hospitalized. Annabel is now solely watching the girls. Meanwhile, Dreyfuss learns that Mama was an insane woman who escaped an asylum. Her baby was taken by nuns, so she took it back and jumped off a cliff, killing both of them. The baby's corpse however, got caught on a branch, and Mama doesn't realize that its dead. When Dreyfuss goes back to the cabin, Mama kills him. Meanwhile, Jean while visiting Annabel's, gets killed by Mama as well, and her body is taken over. She takes the girls to the woods. Annabel and Lucas find Mama and the girls on the cliff, about to jump. But Annabel brings the baby's remains and Mama stops awhile, before realizing that she is being tricked. Lilly doesn't want to leave Mama's side, and plunges down with her to their death. Victoria clings to Annabel, who has made her decision to live with her new parents.
