Three best friends, Daisy, Jo Jo, and Kat are waitresses at the Mystic Pizza restaurant, in the small seaside tourist, blue-collar town of Mystic, CT. Daisy is approximately 20, her sister Kat is 18, and their best friend Jo Jo is 19.
All three girls struggle with love and decisions about their future.

Kat has been accepted to Yale, but due to her family's low-income, she must wait a semester and takes on 4 jobs to pay for college.

Jo Jo is torn about marrying her boyfriend at such a young age. Daisy is insecure about what lies in her future, not having the brains like her sister Kat, and knowing she can't get by on her beautiful young looks forever.

Kat is secure about her future as a student, yet her love life has always been lacking, her older sister Daisy always getting the breaks with the boys. Kat turns to the arms of an older, married man with heartbreaking results. Jo Jo needs to decide if her single life is worth giving up her boyfriend forever for, and must realize her true feelings when he delivers an ultimatum. Daisy falls for the mysterious rich boy who drives into town on a break from college, and has to discover on her own that she is better than she has let herself believe.

Kat (Gish) and Daisy (Roberts) are sisters who work at a pizza parlor in Mystic, Connecticut with their friend Jojo (Taylor). The story revolves around the love lives of the three women. Kat, the brainy one of the group, is off to Yale in the fall and over the summer finds herself drawn to a local architect named Tim (Moses), a married man whose young daughter she is babysitting for. Daisy, the wild free spirited one meets a wealthy law school drop out who comes to town named Charles (Storke) and falls head over heels for him despite the fact that his family has a difficult time accepting her because she's poor and portugeuse. Jojo loves her fiance Bill (D'Onofrio) but leaves him at the altar because she's afraid of commitment. Meanwhile a food critic is on his way to town to sample the legendary mystic pizza. Many customers of the pizzeria say that the pizza seems to contain an ingredient that makes it almost... well, mystic.
