Nell has remained isolated from the world for all her life. After the deaths of her mother and sister, she is discovered living alone in the remote woods, unable to communicate except with a language of her own. She is studied by a few doctors – one who wants to observe her where she's most comfortable and help her remain where she is, and others who wish to remove her from the woods and study her in a psychiatric institution.
