Spencer Tracy stars as Rudolph "Dutch" Muller, a conceited tuna fisherman. Jean Harlow co-stars as Harriet "Hattie" Tuttle, a tuna canner who is in love with Dutch but pretends not to be. The owner of the fish company Nick Lewis (Joseph Calleia) wants to bring in scab workers but Dutch rallies the workers and averts a strike by talking sense into the men. Later that night, Dutch goes to the 4th of July party and meets up with Hattie. They dance and bicker but eventually meet up outside where Dutch asks hattie to marry him. Hattie accepts but then dutch shoot his mouth off and they are quickly bickering again. The fishermen eventually do go on strike and scab workers are brought in but Dutch want's to keep on fighting, but the men want to work and fire Dutch as their union leader. after losing his job, Dutch loses Hattie too as he goes to live with bums. Hattie finds out about this and steals money from Nick to help Dutch. For this she goes to prison but all is well by the end of the movie.
