Nick, a Boston police officer, and his partner Bobby find gold during a drug bust and decide to steal some of it for themselves. Nick needs money to make his wife, Julia, the happiest woman alive. However, the guilt of his actions weigh heavy on his conscience, and he tells Bobby he plans on returning the gold. The next day, while shooting at some criminals, Bobby kills Nick to cover up his actions. Upon ascending into limbo, Nick is informed he will become a member of the Rest in Peace Department: the R.i.P.D. The purpose of the department is to find "deados," dead people who refuse to leave the Earth and move into the afterlife. Nick is partnered with Roy, an Old West cowboy type who has been a member of the department since the 1800s. Nick and Roy go back to Earth, having had their appearance transformed to the living to look like different people. Upon the completion of their first mission, Nick finds gold in the deado's possession, gold identical to the type he stole with Bobby. They follow this lead, tailing Bobby, and they discover him meeting with deados about the gold. It turns out that Bobby is a deado himself, bent on using the gold to build a special device that would return all the deados back to Earth to rule over the living. Nick and Roy must find a way to stop Bobby before humankind is doomed.
