Owen Coughlin, an elderly business owner in the Maine area is coming to the end of his career. He is a boat builder, like his father before him. His son-in-law, John Alder, wants him to sell out and give up the slowly dying business. Daryl Monahan works for Owen, and is responsible for his retarded brother. Daryl wants to marry his girlfriend, and be independent of this burden. His brother good naturedly hangs around the boat shop; generally staying out of trouble, until one day, Daryl angrily admits his feelings to him. The boy goes out on a boat, and almost drowns. Finally, seeing that his purpose in life was to take care of the boy, the old boat builder makes a life changing decision.
