When a mysterious videotape shows up, a single-mom (Watts) brazenly watches it, albeit the tape has already killed four viewers. As a newspaper intern, her curiosity and tireless research lead her to a remote, foggy island off Seattle to piece together the tape's elements which include a lighthouse, a tree, oval picture frames, insects and a dead horse. She subsequently believes the tape is some kind of message from a young girl long dead. When she interviews the girl's father, who denies ever having a daughter, she senses she is indeed on the right track.
