Iranian activists invade a US embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979. They take more than 50 hostages. Six of the hostages escape and stay in the home of a Canadian ambassador. The US State Department begin creating strategies to bring the escapees home. They call in Special Agent Tony Mendez to complete the job. Tony has a vision one day while he is watching The Planet of the Apes. Tony's idea is that the escapees will say that they are Canadian filmmakers who are in Iran looking up locations to shoot a science-fiction film. The create a fake film production company and the development of a fake science-fiction movie called Argo. Special Agent Mendez enters Iran posing as a producer for Argo. He reaches the escapees and gives them their fake passports. Tony Mendez must get the escapees safely out of Iran and the US has to deal with the rest of the 50 hostages.
