Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Short Term 12

Grace is a young woman, working at a short-term foster-care facility for at-risk youths. She works with, among others, her boyfriend Mason and newcomer Nate. Nate attempts to settle in and get a bead on exactly how to treat the children, while Grace struggles with revealing to Mason the fact that she is pregnant. Having been impregnated under adverse circumstances in the past, the idea of having a child terrifies her and stirs up emotional baggage. Grace, Mason, and Nate try to reach Marcus, a young black man who rarely talks, nervous about his upcoming 18th birthday, upon which he will asked to leave the facility and go into the world on his own. Grace also attempts to get to know Jayden, the daughter of a friend of the head of the facility, staying in the facility while her single father is out of town on work. After talking to Jayden over an extended period, Grace realizes that Jayden is deeply troubled after all... and perhaps her story is not terribly different from Grace's story as a child. She is forced to confront a series of life-changing decisions at once: she tries to deal with her straining relationship with Mason, the pending parole of her father from prison, and the treatment of Jayden, whom Grace believes should not be allowed to be around her father. All of these problems come to a head at once, leaving Grace's mental health pushed to the brink.
