The second book in the Vampire Academy series tells the story of dhampir Rose Hathaway and Moroi Lissa Dragomir as they continue studying in the academy. Every dhampir needs to pass a Qualifier Exam, and so does Rose. In order to have the exam, she and Dimitri travel to a legendary guardian's family's house, only to find out he has been murdered by Strigoi - the evil, dead vampires.

In order to protect the students in the Vampire Academy, they are all taken, escorted by other guardians, to a ski trip. During the ski trip one of the Moroi is attacked by a Strigoi, and Rose, as well as her friend Mason and a few others, believe the guardians should hunt the Strigoi and kill them.
In Rose's personal life, she find out Dimitri might leave the academy in order to protect another Moroi, with whom he would also have a romantic relationship. Jealous, she has a fight with him, resulting in her telling her friends where to find the Strigoi. They leave that night.
Once Rose finds out about their plans, she and Christian set out to find them. They manage to convince them to return, but they are all caught be the Strigoi they were hunting. The Strigoi threaten to turn the Moroi, Christian and their second companion, Mia, into Strigoi, and in order to stop them from doing that, Rose and Mason come up with an escape plan. They manage to escape, but Mason gets killed. Rose kills the Strigoi who attacked him.
After returning to the academy, Dimitri tells Rose that he turned down the offer and he will not leave her.
