The book tells the story of Rose Hathaway, searching for her newly-turned-into-Strigoi lover in order to kill him, thus setting him free. Rose travels to Russia in order to find Dimitri. She guesses he will be near his hometown, and so turns to Siberia. On her way there she meets a girl named Sydney, who joins her. They manage to arrive to Dimitri's hometown safely and meet his family. His family is doing Dimitri's obsequies, knowing that once he is a Strigoi, he cannot come back.

While in their town, Rose meets another bonded couple like Lissa and her. She learns about being "Shadow-Kissed", which is what she is. Also, a man named Abe, who lives there as well, tries to force her back into the academy. She runs away with a few more dhampir students in order to find Dimitri.
Dimitri finds her eventually and kidnaps her. He feeds off her, thus weakening her, and tries to convince her to let him turn her into a Strigoi so they can be together, but Rose manages to escape. He catches up with her and they fight, but Rose ends up killing him.
In the meanwhile, Rose finds out that a new girl in the academy, Avery, is trying to kill Lissa in order to revive her and make her her "Shadow-Kissed". Rose guides Adrian and Lissa through the fight and stops the other Moroi and her brother just in time to save Lissa.
Rose returns to Dimitri's hometown, where she finds out Strigoi can be restored to what they were before getting turned into Strigoi - Moroi or dhampir. She discovers the only one who knows how to do so is Victor's brother, who haven't been seen in a long time. Rose realizes she has lost all hope, since she'd already killed Dimitri.
After returning to the academy and agreeing to finish studying there, Rose recieves a message from Dimitri, telling her he is still alive and looking forward to seeing her again.
Best part of story, including ending:
I didn't quite like the story but I didn't hate it either. It was interesting to read and was very deep, but I also missed the relationships between Rose and Lissa and Rose and Dimitri.
Best scene in story:
I didn't have a favorite scene.
Opinion about the main character:
I like that Rose is willing to do everything for the people she loves, no matter how much it pains her.
