Disturbing, heavily detailed by first rate and compelling story of Marie Carter, a young woman who is released from prison after serving an eleven year sentence for murders under the influence of hard drugs. When she returns to her family, they all wish to disown her, apart from her two children from years ago who are at the mercy of overbearing parents and Patrick Connor, London's most feared Afro-British gang leader who is involved in drugs and prostitution. With the help of her children and those at her new place of work, she seeks to uncover the truth about what really happened eleven years ago - and take revenge in the process. But there are also rival families of those Marie is accused of murdering who wish to see her dead, and so a gang war erupts. A gripping novel which will grab your attention and the twist at the end is one of the most well-crafted ever. British author Martina Cole, I can safely say, is a talent that nobody can match!

karam on 1/2/2017 4:41:53 AM says: Last book that I read in closing days of 2016 - Gripping story with lot of East End characters whose characterization sticks in mind. The world of Afro-British gangster and Pimp who breaks in young girls with drugs to work for him. Story of Marie carter who spent twelve years in prison for murder of two of her fellow drug addicts - Traces her family that had disowned her and eventually meets her son and daughter. Though plenty of rough bad characters in the book but on occasions they show their human side of compassion and love and soft spot for kids. It certainly did grab my attention and became compelling obsession to read to end quickly to put together brilliantly woven web.
