In Colorado, Alaina Chancellor's mom arrives to see her vanished daughter for the first time in nine years. Not long afterward, Alaina's former lover and brother-in-law shows up and tries to rape her, but her mother intercedes. Five years later in Chicago, private detective Mitch Kane easily finds Alaina, who he at first believes is a nasty piece of work for running off with his employer's son. However, he begins to change his mind as he realizes that his cilent played him for a fool using his own feelings towards his ex-wife as a tool. As Mitch falls in love with Alaina, he vows to keep her and her son safe from her ex-lover.
