Skillfully distracting and deceiving the West for four months while its army trains, the USSR convinces the world that West Germany is preparing to attack. Using this excuse, the Red Army invades. America, Britain, and France stand by their treaty commitment, and World War III starts.

The Soviet surprise attack, including an invasion of Iceland and the closing of the Atlantic to NATO, catches the West horribly off guard, and NATO is thrown into a desparate defense. But the West comes roaring back, forcing the Soviets into a stalemate.

Soon, the entire war comes down to the outcome of a single battle deep in West Germany. Both armies are at the breaking point, and a startling plot in being carried out in the capital of a superpower...

A multi-theater story of what World War Three could have been like involving sea battles, land battles, and a long trek to freedom on Soviet occupied Iceland. Also involved are a number of high-tech instruments of war including the previously secret F-117 stealth fighter plane and the simple use of a common video tape recorder to find enemy fuel storage sites as viewed from sattelite spy cameras.Includes many stories of individual heroism and sacrifice,as well as a developing romance between a U.S.soldier and a young Icelandic woman(pregnant)who he rescued from certain rape and death at the hands of Russian invaders.Without question the finest fictional war story ever written.

If I never read another book, I'll be satisfied. This is THE war novel to end all war novels. If you think Clancy's stories of Jack Ryan are all Clancy has to offer, then you're seriously in the dark my friends. While this isn't a Jack Ryan book, it's the best War novel I've ever read. Go read this immediately.
