susan kuehn posts on 8/14/2010 11:51:11 PM This message is really for Ms. Rice, not to be posted. I just want her to have it to read. I was also a cultural catholic, I liked to say a secular catholic. I even went so far as to do a master in theological studies at the Washington Theological Union in Maryland. But I have had trouble with the Church for many years over various issues, not the least of which is I was trained and certified a chaplain while at the Union and cannot perfom my duties while a member of my own Church. Yet I have not been able to leave. I have tried a number of different denominations and other Eastern philosophies, but kept coming back for the Mass and the Eucharist. While I would not go so far as to say I am no longer Christian, I find that Ms. Rices' interview ( sent to me by my mother) clarified some issues for me and has made it easier for me to say that the best way for me to reach out to God is simply to sit in a quiet place and pray directly to the Spirit or do something kind for someone - some kind of action. I have stopped going to Mass but couldn't make the final break until I read the interview in the LA Times. Thank-you. I have always admired your writing and your answers have helped me over a 25 year hump concerning the Spirit and how to relate to that spirit.Susan
Valencia posts on 7/30/2010 12:13:46 PM Hi Anne, You don't know me but I'm a Christian. I can understand why Christians might get on your nerves, frankly, sometimes they get on mine. But Anne, if you believe in Christ, than one day you will live with Him in heaven. His family will be those Christians that got on your nerves, guess what, they get on His nerves sometimes too. But, on earth none of us are perfect, no not one, but in heaven, we all will be perfect and able to get along with everyone of God's children. If you can't forgive and forget the wrong things that Christians do, how can you expect God to forgive the wrong things that you do? The Bible says, " How can you say you love God whom you've never seen, but hate the neighbor you see everyday"? Anyway Anne, that is mine and God's take on ditching Christianity.
