Colin Forbes Message Board

Tony Mallett posts on 12/31/2012 8:51:39 AM Colin Forbes, in the Tweed series, doesn’t actually write a series of books he merely rewrites the same plot over and over again with just minor differences. The main changes seem to be in the exotic locations and exclusive eateries perhaps to allow him to claim his holidays and meals as research thus reducing his tax bill.
Per posts on 11/24/2012 7:38:51 PM I thought No Mercy was a book for children around 14 years of age when I began to read it. I changed my opinion after reading on, it is for children 10 years of age. Not only are the characters shallow, the dialogue forced, the plot moronic, but it reeks of an essay in elementary school.
Eddie Barton posts on 6/24/2012 6:59:46 AM Thoroughly enjoy his books.Good team characters,Though everytime Tweed speaks,in my mind I see Capt.Main Waring (Dads Army !)Paula is also taking over the lead

Neville posts on 6/13/2012 6:18:01 AM Just struggled through The Sisterhood and regret I cannot believe any publisher would even accept such ill-written drivel - never mind it getting on a best seller list! I only persevered with it after the first chapter to see if it could get any worse - and I was NOT disappointed! Glad it was given to me - if I had actually paid for it I would demand a refund!
Prem Taparia posts on 5/23/2012 6:05:12 AM Colin Forbes is the worst ever author I've read. Have just read three of his novels (Sisterhood and 2 others..can't even remember their names!) and these are enough to survive me for a life time. Something is wrong with the "Best Seller" rating mechanism, otherwise for sure an author like him would never figure even in the top 100 (forget top 10)list. That he has written over 50 books is mind numbing...were the publishers out of their mind?? Even if published, I fail to understand how some readers have actually taken a liking to them (obviously its because of such readers that the author has managed to survive so long). Anyway..to each his own...I can only advise (and warn) the uninitiated to stay as far away as possible from his books...or to read on their own peril.....
Brenda posts on 2/6/2012 12:23:54 PM I've just read my first (and last!) Colin Forbes novel, "Cross of Fire". What an irritating style of writing and such a confusing plot - jumping on and off planes from one spot to the next, non-stop. The plot is so unbelievable as to be laughable, and the sentence structure is so strange, almost as though English was not his native tongue. Well, 'been there, done that' but I definitely don't want the Colin Forbes T-shirt!
H K Prakash posts on 1/26/2012 8:47:01 AM All I can say in Colin's defense is, if you want to criticize him, please write a series of best sellers first! Write a book better than Tramp in Armor or Heights of Zervos or Palermo Ambush or .. or .. or (take your pick). I understand he has gone from our midst. If you can read this, Colin, thanks for many hours of entertainment! Prakash
Anatoly posts on 11/29/2011 5:48:51 AM A couple of words in defence of Colin Forbes. I am not a native Englishspeaker and I just like reading English books. I came upon Target 5 at the secondhand book shop several years ago. I read it in one breath. Now I am rereading it experiencing the same delight. Well may be I am not particularly a demanding reader, but thanks to reading Target 5 I learned many lessons for myself, and for that I am thankful to Colin
joy allen posts on 8/21/2011 1:29:55 PM I've read a few of his books now, spanning the years, hoing that the quality of writing improves; sadly it doesn't. The writing is stilted with bad sentence construction that does not read well, the plots are unbelievable, the characters are total caricatures and Colin Forbes can't write dialogue for toffee! I hate not finishing a book but, the prologue and a few pages of Chapter One of 'Sinister Tide' are as much as I can take and have spurred me on to post on this website! How on earth he keeps appearing in the 'best seller' list, heaven only knows. The books read like early 20th Century, bad translations into English.
Tushar Srivastava posts on 5/10/2011 9:12:32 AM I am amazed at the vitriolic reactions against Colin Forbes, who, for me, has been one of the most successful thriller writers of the last few decades. As far as I can see here, the biggest criticism that Forbes has faced from most of the readers is that his characters are not developed properly. While I would concede that to an extent, I would say, in his defence, that Forbes probably sacrificed character development for a smooth flow in his stories. I think this is the most important part in a thriller novel. I just love the way Forbes' novels pick up pace. He doesn't waste time in telling people what his characters look like or how they dress, because he moves straight to the point. He would rather concentrate on the surroundings. And that, I think, is something which is very unique to him. His books are well researched. One funny criticism I noticed is that Tweed doesn't like mobile phones but still ends up using them! How hillarious! I know people who don't carry a cellphone even these days but do borrow them to make a call when required. Folks, don't put down a writer just for the sake of it. I think Forbes' earlier novels, those not featuring Tweed, were much better. But that's not to stay that the Tweeed ones are trash! He wrote much better than most people and I have throughly enoyed his books.
