David Gerrold Message Board

Steve posts on 4/3/2007 3:39:06 PM Does any one know if the original Chtorr books are to be altered in any way? It has been some time since I read the first 4 books, and I would like to read them again (I found them to be a bit cathartic when I read them), but I will wait if the books are to republished with significant changes.
Mark Forem posts on 2/20/2007 3:32:05 PM AGH Enough already with the pleasantries. Either bring on the main course (in this case the book) or let us go out to eat!
Balor posts on 2/20/2007 7:12:34 AM I totally agree with both steves, but more to the latter. I think mr. g is disrespecting this readers by not sharing his progress/problems with writing. a lot of other good writers have a blog and are updating it. if he would write: the last year I only saw films and ate chocolate to gain energy for this year, fans would congratulate him. I foresee that a lot of fans will not buy book 5 due to this bad "marketing strategy". see the stunning success of harry potter: keep the flame alive and you will earn a lot of bucks...

Steve posts on 2/19/2007 4:04:36 PM Respect is a two way street. I will use the following analogy from my own profession: I tell my class that we will be working on a science experiment later in the week based upon subject matter we have been covering in class. They are eagerly looking forward to it, and they let me know this repeatedly. But, due to circumstances betond my control, a certain material I need to perform the experiment is currently unavailable. Do I simply ignore my students and say nothing when they ask me about the experiment OR do I tell them the situation, and hope that they respect what I have done in the past enough that they will be patient with me. Yes, they will ask again (and again and again). I might have to tell them over and over that it is on back order. Maybe some will doubt me. But at least I have done my part. I have shown my students, if I choose the latter option, the respect they deserve.
Damian posts on 2/19/2007 2:19:25 PM Time will tell if the series is finished. Just remember that we would not be here talking about the next book over a decade after the last one if we were not inspired, touched, scared, disgusted, aroused, and amazed all at once by this series. The idea is for each book to get better, and sometimes it takes time to perfect things. If you want something constructive to do lobby for the movie to be made. CGI is finally good enough I think. And if the hints of where this is going haven't given some clue to where the brains behind everything is, too bad. I do hope all the books will be released again when the new one comes out as I do not want to loan my originals out.
Steve Chase posts on 2/19/2007 11:48:13 AM David Gerrold (the real one) was guest of honor at Boskone 44 this weekend. He says he's on track to finish the series, but refused to discuss details. The Boskone Guest of Honor book included several chapters from book 6, called "It Needs Salt." (I read it last night instead of sleeping. "It needs salt," is a very scary punch line.) Gerrold also gave a speech about the nature of sentience and talked about the chtorr for a bit. I had a chance to chat with him at the dead dog party and I asked him if he reads fannish websites or message boards. He said, "not any more." That opened up a group discussion about science fiction fandom as a community that has the power to be a family. At it's best, it can be a supportive, respectful environment. At its worst, it's like Jerry Springer. Why would anyone aspiring to sentience willingly subject himself to toxic or abusive people. I wish some of the people here could have heard the discussion. The point of being a fan isn't to trash the writers we like, but to cheer them on and encourage them to be at their best. Maybe if fans treated authors better, more authors would be more willing to visit message boards like this. Just my two cents <plunk plunk>
Larry posts on 2/19/2007 11:25:19 AM Frankly I've given up, I do not expect that the series will ever be finished.
Dave Gerrold (the fake one) posts on 2/12/2007 11:49:04 PM So much to say...but you will have to be patient...
Dave G Says posts on 1/29/2007 8:30:49 PM I am in total agreement. This is obviously childish and completely in contradiction to the MODE training. As a result, I shall stop providing no updates...
Alobar posts on 1/28/2007 5:05:28 PM Agreed, this is just getting dumb. I'll check back in a month or so, see if there's any real communication going on and not just people--who haven't written books of their own, I might add--whining.
