Eleni is the true story of Nick Gage (Malkovich) and his search for the truth about his mother's execution during the Greek civil war immediately following World War II. His mother, Eleni, was a kind woman who was called "Amerikaner" because her husband lived in the United States. Wrongly accused of being a fascist, she was thrown in prison and then shot. Years later, Nick set out to Greece to find the man responsible for her execution and kill him.
