Becky (Rachel McAdams) has always dreamt of working for the Today Show. But since the big networks wouldn't take her resume, she's ended up working for Good Day New Jersey, the local morning program. One day, she receives a call with an offer to produce a struggling national program: DayBreak.

Becky is hired on to DayBreak and meets Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton) and Paul McVee, whom she fires and replaces with Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) - an old-school anchor who was under contract but currently not working - through a loophole in his contract.
During this, Becky becomes involved with Adam, another producer. They become romantically involved, signaling an uptick in Becky's life.
Her professional life, however, dwindles. She becomes increasingly focused on boosting the show's ratings and starts to neglect Adam for work, leading to a fight.
Soon the show is on the brink of cancellation, causing Becky to take drastic action to both fix her personal relationships and the program.
